About the Artist
Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840) was a celebrated 19th-century landscape painter, widely regarded as the most important German artist of his generation. His mid-period allegorical landscapes are iconic, often depicting contemplative figures silhouetted against night skies, morning mists, barren trees, or Gothic ruins. Friedrich’s work masterfully places human presence in diminished perspective amidst expansive, awe-inspiring landscapes.
One of his most famous works, Wanderer above the Sea of Fog (German: Der Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer), painted circa 1818, is considered a masterpiece of Romanticism and a defining representation of the movement.
