Step into art history with socks featuring the iconic artwork “The Kiss” by Francesco Hayez. This masterpiece, celebrated for its romantic and patriotic symbolism, is brought to life in a wearable form.
The Story Behind “The Kiss”
- “The Kiss” was first exhibited at the Brera Exhibition of 1859, a significant event held shortly after the entry of Victor Emanuel II and Napoleon III into Milan.
- This painting became a symbol of the Risorgimento, celebrating the young nation’s triumphs after the Second War of Independence.
- The artwork was not added to the Pinacoteca until 1886, as part of a legacy from Alfonso Maria Visconti, who had commissioned the piece.
A Symbol of Patriotism and Romanticism
- Widely regarded as one of the most reproduced Italian paintings of the 19th century, “The Kiss” embodies the love of the motherland and a thirst for life.
- The painting’s colors carry a patriotic message:
- Red stockings, green lapel, and blue and white gown allude to the flags of Italy and France.
- Its medieval-inspired subject and daring kiss resonated with the Romantic taste of the era, making it an immediate success.
- Hayez also created other versions of this masterpiece, now housed in various European collections.
